Olivia Parker
In this image i can see collections of sea shells which is the theme of her work in this image, this is why she also has a bunch of wooden sticks. In this image the objects that she chose also create a shadow and the one in the top left of the image looks like a wheel, the shells make a ridge oval shaped shadow too. They have also used space as the bottom half of the image is basically empty with just a few lines of shadows. The texture of the paper which is underneath the objects looked crumpled with also having a few stains and some holes leading up the paper from the middle on them, this makes it seem as if the paper is old and it shifts some of the shadows slightly and distorts the image. Olivia has used light coming from the top of the image this makes all of the shadows come down the image, however it seems as if its coming from a window because there are some thick natural shadow lines which could be formed from where the light is originally coming from. Olivia also uses black and white in this image so that the detail in the shells and shadows can be seen very easily. The mood it creates for me is that the shells and sticks are lost because they are in a group but not were they should naturally be, for example they are on paper probably in a home whereas they should be on a beach. This image is of the genre of still life as it contains natural objects in a still and frozen way and it is also quite unusual. It is unusual because they are objects that are present in the image seem as if they don't really belong together and the barnacles that are growing onto the shell gives it an unusual effect.
I think Olivia created this image by using a lot of repetition, for example i think she took the image many times to make sure she has the objects in the perfect place and angle to not only create the shadows in a better way but to make it look appealing. it also may of taken along time because of the lighting, for example she would of had to take the picture with a lot of different styles and angles of the light. if i was making this image i would set up the camera from a birds eye view and look through it whilst i change around the objects to make sure the composition looks perfect and the shadows look like what i want them too be like. Another reason why it may of taken a lot of attempts is the paper this is because she had to get it perfect and the paper has a lot of imperfections on it which she had to create for example the holes, stains and creases on the paper, to really capture the effect that she wanted to it would have taken quite a few try's to create those imperfections on the paper just how she wanted them.
This image makes me feel lost, this is because all of the natural objects on the piece of paper have been taken from its environment for example the beach and where the shells come from this is also because one of the shells has grown barnacles from the baring of the ocean which is where it is meant to be. The black and white also makes me feel disheartened as the image could have a lot more beauties within the color of the objects or even the stains on the paper could tell more of a story. However it makes me feel a sense of togetherness as all of the objects are not alone and they come as a collective. A final feeling that this image gives me is what the still life of the image creates for example the still image makes me feel intrigued as the shell will for ever be here in this image but it is probably somewhere else in the world right now. If i could speak to the artist the questions i would ask her,
What gave you the idea to have those types of objects?
How did you make the shadows for example the wheel is so perfect but some of the thicker lines are quite wavy?
How many attempts did it take to create the final image?
Basic research of the image can help me understand the meaning of the reason she uses still images, for example she believes that whether she takes an image of something dead or alive are instead all signs of life. Also i now know that she uses natural lighting which means her work is even harder to achieve as some days there may not even be the correct light at all. The understanding of the image changes slightly as i now know the meaning of the image in more depth. This picture relates to the theme of collections because the objects that are in the image are all in groups so they are a collection within themselves, however it is also used the theme of collection because the objects that she has used she thinks of them as her own artifacts and things that she has collected herself and she says by doing this it "expanded my world".

Final piece
In these series of photos i have been inspired by Olivia Parkers work by using her theme of collections as you can see the objects that i have used i have used a group of them for example the sticks and the marbles. I have also used the same background which is a piece of paper which i have personally creased to create a similar effect to what Olivia did and it also makes shadows behind the creases which stick out. With these images i have edited them on the photo app to make them black and white but not only this but i have cropped most of them to make sure the composition of the images are as good as they can be. I have made sure to create shadows by using the flash on my camera in a dark area. I also used an object outside of the frame to make an eluding shape over the image which is a water bottle. I also tried to capture still life in one of my images by using a two flowers laying over each other and you can see the detail clearly.
